In efforts to build capacity and enhance technical skills among students, Computing for Development laboratory (C4D Lab) in partnership with Huawei Technologies have today, November 10 unveiled a fully fledged Information Technology teaching laboratory at the University of Nairobi (UoN). The laboratory second of its kind by Huawei Authorized Network Academy (HAINA or Huawei Academy)is designed to build skills among students. The first was opened in 2013 at Strathmore University Laboratory.
Huawei Academy is a non-profit programme that authorizes universities, colleges and schools to deliver Huawei certification courses. The leader in ICT works closely with organizations or education institutions to deliver industry standard training and certification to students and assists them to set up the Academy programmes.
Speaking on behalf of Huawei CEO, Dean Yu, Mr. Daniel Yang said “the establishment of HAINA solution is a proof that Huawei continues to be a global ICT leader not only in mobile technology but also in provision of educational programs to benefit students undertaking courses in ICT and Computer Sciences.
The solution has adopted the popular university-enterprise cooperation model and features co-operation with universities in different countries in course development, training and certification.
Students at the University of Nairobi will acquire cutting-edge knowledge of ICT technology, master relevant skills, and improve their individual capabilities through elaborate hands on practical training experiences. Students going through the HAINA labs will also obtain ICT career certification to increase their employability.
On behalf of University of Nairobi VC, Prof Mbithi, Managing Director of UoN Enterprises and Services, Mr John Kenduiwo welcomed the major partnership to assist in bridging the skill set gap between academic training and industrial needs.
He continued “this partnership will bring on board expertise in ICT and related technology. Hence, the university will provide the necessary resources to see to it that our students get the most out of the programme and in turn change the entire scope of the ICT Industry in terms of application of the skills gained.”
