IEK western week industrial tour

The Institution of Engineers of Kenya organized between 15th and 19th November the 2016 Western Kenya Industrial Tour. This tour took place between the 15th and 19th of November, 2016. The tour covered site visits to various infrastructure projects in Nakuru, Eldoret, Webuye, Kitale and Kisumu. 

Day 1

In Nakuru, the over 60 members of IEK had the opportunity to visit the Geothermal Development Company‘s (GDC) geothermal steam exploration site at Menengai. The GDC engineers provided insight on the process of geothermal steam exploration and harvesting of the steam and various uses of the steam by products like hot water for activities like green housewarming, fish farming and industrial processes.

The team was treated for lunch at the club courtesy of GDC.

Day 2

In Eldoret, a visit to one of projects being undertaken by the Lake Victoria North Water Services Board was the Ellegerini-Kapsoya Water Project whose scope was the increase of water supply to Eldoret town by expanding the water treatment plant and installation of an additional intake pipe from the main water reservoir serving the treatment plant. The consultant, Mangat IB Patel took the team round from the dam to the on-going treatment plant, culminating with lunch sponsored by LVWSB through the consultant. 

The team also visited the Eldoret Sewerage Works, ELDOWAS where the participants were taken through the process of sewage treatment and management in integration of the treated waste water.

Day 3

A visit to the rehabilitation works for the Webuye-Kitale Road was particularly interesting especially since the participants were informed and shown how the design incorporated interchanges to the major linking roads and the support reinforcement of the existing bridges along the road. Kenha sponsored the lunch at Kitale club.

As part of the Institutions social responsibility, representatives from the IEK Council visited a Children’s home in Eldoret. Led by the 1st Vice President of IEK, Eng. Rosemary Kungu, IEK donated foodstuffs and spent time with the children of the orphanage. A cheque contribution of Ksh. 50,000 was presented to the administrator of the children’s home.

Day 4

The study tour included the visit to KenGen’s Sondu Power Station. The tour included a visit to the water intake point, the generation station and transmission substation. Lunch was served at the club courtesy of KenGen.
