The Kenya Association of Manufacturers held the Sustainable Energy week at Safari Park hotel from 29th to 31st March 2017. The Expo closed with the Energy Management Award ceremony. This year’s edition had seventy entries of large, medium and small-scale businesses. The theme for 2017 was “Thirteen years towards a green economy

 

Opening the conference Eng. Joseph Njoroge the Principal Secretary (PS) for Energy observed that the government was working toward Universal power access by 2020, by the end of 2017 there will be70% coverage as per his projections. Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) and the Ministry of Energy jointly organized the Renewable energy week.

The PS emphasized on the need for sustainability and efficiency in industries. “We need to emphasize on clean energy conservation and efficiency as a strategy to reduce emissions and conserve our environment. We cannot continue to play down the effect of climate change. Without the environment we cannot have life on earth. Increasing our efficiency by 10% will bring down our emissions in a substantial way” He said. He noted that over 450 manufacturing facilities have benefited from energy audits by KAM. He further encouraged KAM to focus on SMEs, not just large energy consumers to enhance efficiency and conservation.

The Energy Management Awards held on the last night of the Expo at Safari Park Hotel saw Chandaria Industries emerge winners of the Overall Management prize, a night that saw businesses adopting green technologies feted for their efforts.

      V.            Fuel Savings Award (Medium Consumer) – BAT thika

    VI.            Fuel Savings Award (Large Consumer) – Athi River Mining Ltd

  VII.            Best energy Management Team Award- Cook N Lite

VIII.            Best New Entrant – Trianium Hospitality (Kolobot Gardens)

    IX.            Technical Committee’s Award-Best presentation – BAT Nairobi

      X.            Best Energy Management –Tea Sector  -Gitugi Tea Factory

    XI.            Best Energy Management –Service Sector – SarovaLionhill Game Lodge

  XII.            Recognition in Water Efficiency- Kenya Breweries, Osho Chemicals, BATA, James Finlays- Kitumbe

XIII.            Overall Energy Management Award-Small Consumer – Gitugi Tea Factory

XIV.            Overall Energy Management Award-Medium Consumer – Chandaria Industries

The Kenya Association of Manufacturers is also battling against the government directive to ban plastic bags. They argue that the ban will kill a KES 100-billion industry in which investors have put in more than KES 88 billion, in addition to causing massive job losses.
