The Engineers’ Board of Kenya (EBK) has finally approved and accredited all the three Engineering programmes offered by the Faculty of Engineering in MMUST. The programmes: BSc. in Civil and Structural Engineering, BSc. in Electrical and Communication Engineering and BSc. in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering have been granted interim accreditation after meeting the minimum EBK requirements with respect to programme design and curriculum content.
It is upon this background that the University is recalling Engineering Students to complete the Second Semester 2015/ 2016. The students (1st Year, 2nd Year, 3rd Year, 4th Year and 5th Year continuing) are expected to report back on 25th July 2016. On 12th April, 2016, the University released all Engineering students to go home following their boycott to attend class and demands that the accreditation matters should be addressed.
The road towards accreditation has been a rigorous and tough journey. We are happy to say that an accreditation visit by EBK members on 25th May 2016 has finally borne fruit. The board during a special board meeting held on 8th July 2016 deliberated on the outcome of the accreditation visit.
In a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor and signed by the Registrar, EBK, Eng. Nicholas M. Musuni, the board commended MMUST for its efforts to equip the Faculty of Engineering with laboratory equipment and staff.
The university however still has to attend to the following areas before full accreditation is granted:
Strengthening of the Faculty teaching staff. The university is expected to implement staff development plans and ensure that only eligible persons teach core engineering courses. MMUST should also encourage the staff to pursue professional registration by EBK.
Continue strengthening of laboratories to reduce the reliance of external facilities.
Demonstrate availability of foreign based adjunct professors who are thematic leaders to attend to the requirements of thematic leadership in the programmes.
EBK will review in six (6) months the status of the two programmes i.e. BSc. in Electrical and Communication Engineering and BSc. in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering to check on the progress made. For Bsc. in Civil and Structural Engineering the review will be in two (2) years.
