KenGen, country’s main power producer has sited interest in developing a solar power station by the end of this year. This comes at a time when the country is seeking to diversify to other sources of energy available in the country. It’s also in the efforts of adopting green forms of energy sources.
The power producer seeks to expand its activity from geothermal power generation to cover wind and solar. It already has a pilot wind power project ongoing at Ngong. The project produces 2MW of electricity but the company has secured additional funding that will see the project expanded to a capacity of 20MW soon.
KenGen was earlier seeking Sh57 billion from willing investors so as to set up a liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered power plant in Mombasa.The plant would run on imported gas.Last month it commissioned another one of its line of geothermal plants in Olkaria,a 280 mega watt geothermal project.
Kenya developed a solar power atlas in 2008 which shows that the country receives an estimated four to six kilowatt hours of solar energy per square metre per day, adequate for commercial exploration. It is presumed that the country’s demand for power is likely to keep on increasing following the high rate of developments and thus, there is need to invest more in energy so as to maintain the development rate.
